Having just finished reading and enjoying "Palm Beach Nasty," I was curious to know whether Tom Turner's next book would be more of the same or equally intriguing and different. I'm delighted to say equally intriguing and different! While I was affirmed in my suspicion about the murderer of Amir, I had no idea who murdered Knight until Charlie and Mort knew. I'm always so glad when that happens. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series. Kudos to Tom Turner! Great settings, well described ambiance, and excellent character descriptions, interactions, and development with a little humorous interplay included. Crawford and Otto do it again. Solving crimes in Palm Beach with great detective skills and a inside view of the life of the rich. I will continue to miss these characters while a new book in the series is out there being written. Tom Turner is a,master of murder mysteries and every Palm Beach Book,while stand alone gets better than the last that is a read you will enjoy and be drawn into.
Okay, let's address the 800# gorilla in the book.
Radio host, check. #1 rated, check. Makes millions, check. Loves golf, check. Lives in Palm Beach, check. I know this is fiction but tell me the author came up with this character out of the blue?
That's fine, but at least don't make him a buffoon. Hated by everyone, rude to callers, screams on his show.....obviously, Tom Turner never listened to the show or he's intentionally lying for political slime.
However, it stopped bothering me when I realized that all the characters were cartoonish.
Even the cops.
I'm not even sure who did it, but I no longer care.
It's a comedy.
I chose a 5star rating because this book held my interest throughout; it was a short read. I finished it in one sitting.
The story flowed beautifully and smoothly with no errors in detail. It was realistic; the characters believable and the storyline interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good police who-done-it. Thank you to the author Tom Turner.
Bought it today (23 April) and finished it today (23 April)... says it all doesn't it. Great detectives, nice plot ! In the beginning you think where is he going, to find out that he's doing his own thing, and leads you along to a fabulous ending. Love it. Avid fan !
If you like Bosch's Crate and Barrel, you're gonna love Charlie Crawford and Mort Ott, who comprise the ace detective bureau of the Palm Beach Police Department. A Rush-Limbaugh type--the "Mouth of the South"--is murdered at one of his soirées, and a good half-dozen guests have reason to want him dead. The mystery is good enough, but the author's skewering of Palm Beach society is more than half the fun here, and nobody is spared. I particularly appreciated that the novel's humor arises from the dry wit of the detectives themselves, rather than from the author shoehorning whackiness into the narrative (as several other notable Florida authors do, with mixed results). I'll be reading the entire series. What a blast!
I've now read the whole Charlie Crawford series and really like the characters. But once again, Mr. Turner needs a good proofreader. But don't kill Charlie off or anything drastic! Good plot lines, great character development, great setting, just that gosh darn confusion over plurals and possession. Drives me kinda crazy.
Tom Turner's books, set in Palm Beach, are crime mysteries featuring the recurring characters of two detectives, Mort Ott and Charlie Crawford. His books are well written, easy to read, and quickly draw the reader in to the case...or cases...presented in the books. He offers so many motive-driven characters that it is sometimes hard for me to keep them straight. As is characteristic of a talented crime novelist, Turner does a wonderful job of concealing the identity of the perpetrator until the very last possible moment.
Turner's books are fun and entertaining, and are perfect for light summer reading, or for any time of the year. Palm Beach Deadly is the third novel I have read by this author, and he doesn't disappoint. I am looking forward to reading more.
